Restaurant Lighting Design for Reveal Design Group
New York City, NY
Completed 2016

Great Northern Food Hall was the brain child of Claus Meyer, whose restaurants Agern and Aquavit are considered temples of haute Scandinavian cuisine. With the Great Northern Food Hall, Mr. Meyer’s aim was to allow “Metro-North commuters and everyday straphangers [to] know the flaky pleasure of the frøsnapper, the creamy comfort of a morning bowl of øllebrød, and the artful construction of a smørrebrød, the open-faced sandwiches of Denmark” (NY Magazine).

The modern Scandinavian aesthetic brought a sense of calm to those entering from the helter-skelter of Grand Central’s main train hall, and Reveal Design Group brought cozy pools and warm washes of light across stone, wood and tiled surfaces to provide a crisp sense of hygge so that the space exuded welcome without causing anyone to miss a train. According to New York Magazine, our work “deserves the highest compliment one might pay to a train-station food court: You’d want to eat there even if you’re not going anywhere.”
